Joshua Chapter 10: Sun, Stand Thou Still — Five Allied Kings, and a Battle Where the Heavens Paused

PROLOGUE — The Cost of a Treaty, and a Remarkable Response

Joshua Raising His Hand Toward the Sky

Joshua 10 opens with the treaty made with Gibeon (chapter 9) being immediately put to the test. This chapter contains the most dramatic and supernatural event of the entire conquest — the miracle of the sun standing still.

ACT ONE — Five Kings Unite to Attack Gibeon (verses 1–5)

“Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai… and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them… that they feared greatly… Five kings of the Amorites… gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.”

Made war against it. The five Canaanite kings regarded Gibeon’s treaty with Israel as an act of betrayal and united to attack them. Since Gibeon was now Israel’s ally, they sent for help.

ACT TWO — Joshua’s Night March, and God’s Certain Promise (verses 6–10)

“And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying… come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us… And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.”

Not a man of them shall stand before thee. God promised immediate and certain victory. Joshua marched all night from Gilgal, arriving by surprise, and God sent hailstones to assist in the battle.

ACT THREE — Sun, Stand Thou Still, the Moment the Heavens Paused (verses 11–15)

The most famous and mysterious moment of this chapter now appears.

“Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies… So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.”

There was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man. This is one of the most debated, yet symbolically powerful verses in Scripture. Whether understood as a literal astronomical event or as poetic expression, its core message is clear — Joshua’s relationship with God was intimate enough that his prayer affected the very motion of the heavens.

ACT FOUR — The Execution of the Five Kings, and the Completion of the Southern Conquest (verses 16–43)

The five kings hid in a cave at Makkedah but were discovered, and Joshua carried out a dramatic act of judgment upon them.

“And Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them. And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage.”

Put your feet upon the necks… be strong and of good courage. This symbolic act was meant to instill confidence in the commanders against every enemy they would face going forward. Israel then went on to conquer, one after another, cities across southern Canaan — Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, Debir.

REFLECTION — A Moment When Prayer Moved the Heavens

The most astonishing insight Joshua 10 gives us is that, within a genuine relationship with God, prayer can receive answers beyond all imagination. Joshua did not merely ask for victory — he asked for intervention in the very motion of the sun and moon, and God heard that prayer.

When you pray, do you ask boldly, without limiting God’s power?
