PROLOGUE — The Last Great Battle of the Conquest
Joshua 11 records the final great battle against a massive coalition of northern Canaanite kings, following the southern conquest (chapter 10). In this chapter, the military phase of the conquest is essentially completed.

ACT ONE — The Great Northern Alliance, Like Sand Upon the Seashore (verses 1–5)
“And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon… and to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth… and to the kings that were in the borders of Dor on the west… And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.”
Much people, even as the sand upon the seashore. This was the largest coalition Israel had faced — far more kings and armies united than the five southern kings. The presence of horses and chariots — the most powerful military technology of the time — is particularly emphasized.
ACT TWO — Fear Not, God’s Certain Promise (verses 6–9)

Before this overwhelming force, God once again gave a clear promise.
“And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.”
Thou shalt hough their horses. This specific instruction is interesting — Israel was not to absorb these powerful chariots and horses into their own military strength. Rather than taking the instruments of victory, they had to neutralize them instead — a measure emphasizing that the true source of Israel’s strength must never be military technology, but God Himself.
The outcome of the battle was overwhelming.
“So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him… and he fell upon them suddenly… and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them.”
ACT THREE — Hazor’s Distinct Fate, and a Summary of the Conquest (verses 10–23)
Of all the conquered cities, Hazor alone was burned.
“And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms… and the children of Israel took all the spoil of these cities… and Hazor only he burnt with fire.”
For Hazor was the head of all those kingdoms. Hazor was the most important political center in the region — archaeological excavations have confirmed it was, at the time, a remarkably large and powerful city. Because of its symbolic significance, Hazor alone was singled out for complete destruction by fire.
This chapter closes with a sentence summarizing the entire conquest.
“So Joshua took all that land… and gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.”
And the land rested from war. This brief sentence marks a deeply significant turning point — the military phase of conquest was over, and a new phase — the division of the land (chapters 13–21) — was about to begin.
REFLECTION — True Power Revealed Only When Strength Is Neutralized
The insight Joshua 11 gives us is that God’s victory is often accomplished not by strengthening our own power, but by neutralizing the very source of our worldly strength. Houghing the horses — voluntarily giving up the most powerful military asset of the time — was an act that clearly identified where the true source of victory actually lay.
Even in a moment of success, do you acknowledge that its true source lies not in your own ability, but in God?
