Today’s Passage
“Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.'” (Matthew 18:21-22)
One-Line Message
The moment you start counting forgiveness, it’s no longer forgiveness.
Reflection
Peter asked, “How many times shall I forgive? Up to seven times?” Given that Jewish rabbinic tradition at the time considered three acts of forgiveness sufficient, seven was already a generous offer. But Jesus answered, “seventy-seven times.” This wasn’t a command to count to 490 — it was a call to stop counting forgiveness altogether. We tend to treat forgiveness like a limited resource, wanting to draw a line and say “this is the last time.” But the forgiveness Jesus taught isn’t arithmetic — it’s grace that overflows beyond counting.
Reflection Questions
- Is there a relationship where you’ve quietly decided, “this is the last time I forgive”?
- If you stopped counting forgiveness, how might you see that relationship differently?
Prayer
Lord, don’t let me keep count of forgiveness. Just as the grace I’ve received is beyond counting, let my forgiveness overflow the same way.
