Forgiveness QT — Episode 2. David Spares His Enemy

Today’s Passage
“The men said, ‘This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, “I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.”‘ Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.” (1 Samuel 24:4)

One-Line Message
Holding back when you have the power to harm is where real forgiveness begins.

Reflection
Saul had been David’s enemy for a long time, hunting him relentlessly. When Saul unknowingly wandered defenseless into the very cave where David was hiding, David’s men urged him to seize the moment — surely God had delivered the enemy into his hands. David could have ended it all with a single strike. Instead, even cutting off a corner of Saul’s robe left his conscience troubled. David valued his standing before God more than the justification for revenge. Forgiveness isn’t letting someone escape punishment — it’s the decision to withdraw our hand and leave judgment to God.

Reflection Questions

  1. Is there a relationship where you have the power or opportunity to harm someone, yet you’re holding back?
  2. What might change if you prioritized your standing before God over the justification for revenge?

Prayer
Lord, help me withdraw my hand even when I have the power to harm. Let me leave judgment to You and keep my heart clean before You.
