PROLOGUE — A Second Attempt After Restoration
Joshua 8 records the second assault on Ai and its complete victory, immediately after Achan’s sin was dealt with (chapter 7), along with the moment of worship established after that victory. This chapter clearly shows that dealing with sin leads directly to the restoration of God’s presence.
ACT ONE — An Ambush Strategy, and Complete Victory (verses 1–29)
“And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.”
Fear not… I have given it into thy hand. After the defeat of chapter 7, God once again firmly promised victory — once the sin was dealt with, the path to victory, once blocked, opened again.
This time, a remarkably sophisticated ambush strategy was employed. Joshua positioned most of his forces in front of the city as a decoy, while a significant contingent lay in ambush behind the city. While the men of Ai, emboldened by their earlier victory, came out to pursue Israel, the ambush force seized the undefended city.
“And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.”
As soon as he had stretched out his hand. This was a prearranged signal from Joshua — a moment where strategy and trust were intricately combined. This time, the entirety of Ai was completely conquered, and the devastation of the first defeat was reversed into total victory.
ACT TWO — An Altar Built on Mount Ebal (verses 30–35)

Immediately following the victory, Joshua turned at once toward worship.
“Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal, As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel… as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron.”
An altar of whole stones over which no iron tool was lifted. This was the exact fulfillment of the regulation already commanded in Deuteronomy 27. The moment the conquest began, Joshua promptly carried out that command.
“And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses… And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal… And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.”
As well the stranger, as he that was born among them. Interestingly, this covenant renewal ceremony included not only the people of Israel, but also foreigners already among them — hinting that people like Rahab were already present within this community.
REFLECTION — The Path to Victory, Reopened After Repentance
The greatest comfort Joshua 8 gives us is that once sin is honestly dealt with, God’s presence and victory are fully restored again. The path to victory, once completely blocked by Achan’s sin, opened wide once more after the process of repentance and purification.
Having honestly faced failure and sin, do you trust the path of restoration God reopens?
