Joshua Chapter 17: Give Us Also an Inheritance — The Tribe of Manasseh, and Zelophehad’s Daughters Once More

Five Sisters Standing Before the Leaders

PROLOGUE — A Wilderness Precedent Actually Applied

Joshua 17 addresses the territory of Manasseh, Joseph’s other son, and shows how the precedent for women’s inheritance rights, already established in Numbers 27 and 36, was actually applied in the land of Canaan.

ACT ONE — Manasseh’s Portion, Spanning Both Sides of the Jordan (verses 1–6)

“There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.”

The tribe of Manasseh received territory uniquely spanning both sides of the Jordan — half had already settled east of the Jordan (Numbers 32), while half now received a new portion west of the Jordan.

ACT TWO — Zelophehad’s Daughters Claim the Promise (verses 3–6)

The most moving moment of this chapter now appears.

“But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher… had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.”

The LORD commanded Moses. The five sisters precisely remembered that event in the wilderness (Numbers 27) — the moment they boldly requested justice — and now claimed that promise upon actual land. This was never merely a past ruling, but a living promise that remained valid across generations, right up to this very moment.

And their request was immediately honored.

“So there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan; Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons: and the rest of Manasseh’s sons had the land of Gilead.”

The daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons. This fulfillment was never merely a documentary confirmation — it was the complete realization of actual land and possession given to the five sisters.

ACT THREE — Manasseh’s Incomplete Conquest, and the Complaint of Joseph’s Descendants (verses 7–18)

The latter half of this chapter moves to Manasseh’s specific boundaries, and mentions, once again, Canaanites who could not be fully driven out.

“Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.”

The descendants of Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh) complained to Joshua that their portion was insufficient.

“Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people?”

Joshua offered them a direct solution — to clear the forested hill country and confront the Canaanites who possessed iron chariots themselves.

“Though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong, thou shalt drive them out.”

REFLECTION — A Promise Kept, and Incomplete Obedience Standing Side by Side

What Joshua 17 shows us is that God’s promise is faithfully kept across time — and, at the same time, that actually possessing that promise still requires continual human effort and obedience. Zelophehad’s daughters received the promise through bold request, but the tribe of Manasseh, through complacency, fell short of complete conquest.

Rather than stopping at simply receiving the promise God has given, are you making continuous effort to actually possess it?
