Today’s Passage
“Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'” (Luke 23:34)
One-Line Message
In His most extreme suffering, the first words He spoke were forgiveness.
Reflection
In the agony of crucifixion, Jesus’ first words weren’t bitterness or condemnation. “Father, forgive them.” It was intercession for the very people mocking and nailing Him to the cross. They hadn’t repented. They hadn’t asked for forgiveness. And yet Jesus forgave first. This shows that forgiveness doesn’t depend on the other person’s worthiness or attitude — it’s a decision made by the one who forgives. This forgiveness, given in the depths of the greatest suffering, stands as the ultimate example for every moment we feel we cannot forgive.
Reflection Questions
- Is there a relationship where you’re withholding forgiveness because the other person hasn’t repented?
- Remembering Jesus’ forgiveness on the cross, what forgiveness do you need to extend right now?
Prayer
Lord, don’t let me make forgiveness conditional on someone else’s repentance. Like You did on the cross, let me forgive first.
