PROLOGUE — Feasts for Remembering, Institutions for Justice
Deuteronomy 16 addresses two subjects — the three pilgrimage feasts Israelite men had to keep each year (Passover, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles), and the system of judges to be established in each town. If the feasts sanctified time, the judges served to uphold justice within the community.
ACT ONE — Passover, Remembering the Day of Hasty Departure (verses 1–8)
“Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night… for thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt in haste: that thou mayest remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of thy life.”
For thou camest forth in haste. Unleavened bread was never merely a regulation — it was a sensory device for remembering, re-experiencing every year, the urgency of that night when Israel had to leave without delay.
ACT TWO — The Feast of Weeks, Joy Given Voluntarily (verses 9–12)
“Seven weeks shalt thou number unto thee: begin to number the seven weeks from such time as thou beginnest to put the sickle to the corn. And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the LORD thy God with a tribute of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto the LORD thy God, according as the LORD thy God hath blessed thee.”
According as the LORD hath blessed thee, a freewill offering of thine hand. Unlike other feasts, the offering for the Feast of Weeks was never a fixed amount, but a voluntary devotion determined by each person’s own circumstances — gratitude for an abundant harvest had to be expressed as joy, not as compulsion.
ACT THREE — The Feast of Tabernacles, and the Principle of Pilgrimage (verses 13–17)
“Thou shalt observe the feast of tabernacles seven days, after that thou hast gathered in thy corn and thy wine… And thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter… because the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thine increase, and in all the works of thine hands, therefore thou shalt surely rejoice.”
A principle recurring across all three feasts is stated — “in the place which the LORD shall choose… they shall not appear before the LORD empty: Every man shall give as he is able.” Worship always had to be accompanied by concrete devotion.
ACT FOUR — Appoint Judges Who Are Impartial (verses 18–22)
This chapter shifts from feasts to social institutions, presenting a remarkably important judicial principle.
“Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment. Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.”
For a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise. A remarkably insightful warning — the danger of a bribe was never confined to the obviously corrupt; it could blind even the wise and righteous. This famous principle follows immediately.
“That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
REFLECTION — A Festival of Remembrance, a Society of Fairness
What Deuteronomy 16 teaches us is that a healthy faith community requires both axes at once — the rhythm of feasts that joyfully remembers past salvation, and impartial justice that honestly sustains today’s life. Worship and justice could never be separated.
