PROLOGUE — The Beginning of the Detailed Law Code
Deuteronomy 12 opens this book’s third major section (chapters 12–26, the detailed law code). Its first subject is the centralization of worship — the principle that Israel must worship only in the one place God Himself has chosen. This expands, with far greater specificity, the principle already presented in Leviticus 17, now applied concretely as Israel stands at the threshold of settling in Canaan.
ACT ONE — Tear Down the Places Where the Canaanite Nations Worshiped (verses 1–4)
“Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree: And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.”
Utterly destroy… destroy the names of them. The defining feature of Canaanite religion was countless altars scattered across mountains, hills, and trees — a polytheistic, decentralized form of worship. What was required of Israel was the exact opposite — a single place, a single God.
ACT TWO — The Place the LORD Would Choose (verses 5–14)
A key phrase recurring throughout this chapter now appears.
“But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come: And thither ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices… and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks: And there ye shall eat before the LORD your God.”
The place which the LORD shall choose. This expression recurs numerous times throughout chapter 12. Interestingly, that place had not yet been specifically named at this point (it would later become Jerusalem). God reserved for Himself the right to determine the details of that choice — Israel could not decide the place of worship according to their own will.
“Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes.”
Every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes. This phrase also serves as a warning foreshadowing the era of the Judges (Judges 17:6, 21:25 — “In those days… every man did that which was right in his own eyes”). When centralized worship collapsed, the result was chaos and moral disintegration.
ACT THREE — New Freedom Regarding Eating Meat (verses 15–28)
Interestingly, the centralization of worship came together with a new flexibility regarding everyday meat consumption.
“Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee: the unclean and the clean may eat thereof, as of the roebuck, and as of the hart.”
Whatsoever thy soul lusteth after. During the wilderness years, all slaughter had to take place before the tabernacle (Leviticus 17), but now, with Israel about to be scattered across a vast land, practical permission was given for everyday slaughter. Yet one principle never changed.
“Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.”
Only be sure that thou eat not the blood. The place of worship became flexible, but the theological principle concerning blood — the principle of Leviticus 17, that life is in the blood — was never compromised.
REFLECTION — A Fixed Center, Yet an Open Freedom
What Deuteronomy 12 teaches us is that faith holds together both a non-negotiable center (the place of worship God Himself has chosen) and, simultaneously, a wisely granted freedom (everyday life). The temptation to determine everything “according to one’s own eyes” was always dangerous, yet this did not mean every area of life had to be uniformly controlled.
