PROLOGUE — Even a Miracle Is No Guarantee of Truth
Deuteronomy 13 addresses three sources that could lead toward idolatry — false prophets, one’s closest family, and the apostasy of an entire city. The core insight of this chapter is that neither a supernatural sign nor an intimate relationship can serve as the final standard for discerning truth.
ACT ONE — A False Prophet Who Performs a Sign (verses 1–5)
“If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them… thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams.”
The sign or wonder come to pass… thou shalt not hearken. This is a remarkably important and challenging principle — the fact that a sign or prophecy was actually fulfilled did not, in itself, guarantee the reliability of its message. The true standard was the content of the message itself — if it led Israel toward other gods, it had to be rejected regardless of how credible the sign appeared.
And the purpose of this test is clearly explained.
“For the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”
ACT TWO — The Temptation of Those Closest to Us (verses 6–11)
The most personal and shocking portion of this chapter follows.
“If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers… Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him.”
Thy brother, or thy son, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend. This list deliberately names the most intimate relationships possible. Temptation toward idolatry could come not from a stranger, but from those most dearly loved.
Moses’s instruction was chillingly resolute.
“But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people… because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.”
Thine hand shall be first upon him. This severity extremely emphasizes that loyalty to God must take absolute priority over emotional attachment even to those we love most.
ACT THREE — Regulations for an Entire City That Has Apostatized (verses 12–18)
Finally, a regulation is given for the case where an entire city turns to idolatry.
“Certain men, the children of Belial… have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known… Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you; Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.”
Thou shalt enquire, and make search, and ask diligently. Even though such an extreme measure was demanded, Moses emphasized the necessity of careful investigation — punishment could never be based on hasty accusation or rumor, but only on thoroughly confirmed fact.
REFLECTION — A Standard of Truth Beyond Signs and Relationships
The most important lesson Deuteronomy 13 teaches us is that the standard for discerning truth is never a supernatural phenomenon or the pressure of an intimate relationship. Even today, an impressive miracle or the persuasion of a beloved person can become a tool of temptation, leading us away from God’s word.
