PROLOGUE — A Rebellion from Within the Levites Themselves
Numbers 16 records one of the most dramatic and terrifying acts of judgment in Israel’s history. Interestingly, Korah, the leader of this rebellion, was himself a Levite — and from the Kohathite clan, the very family entrusted with the most holy duties.
ACT ONE — The Challenge of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram (verses 1–15)
“Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly… Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?”
Ye take too much upon you. Korah’s argument sounded plausible on the surface — if all the people were holy, why should Moses and Aaron alone hold special status? But this argument was a fundamental challenge to the order God Himself had established. Beneath this rebellion dressed in the language of equality lay, in truth, a hidden desire for a higher position for themselves.
Moses’s response was calm.
“Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.”
The LORD will shew. Moses did not defend himself, but left the matter for God Himself to judge directly.
ACT TWO — The Censer Test, and God’s Warning (verses 16–24)
“Be thou and all thy company before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow: And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers.”
The next day, the whole congregation gathered in confrontation. And God’s glory appeared.
“I will consume them in a moment… Shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?”
Moses and Aaron interceded once again, and God confined judgment to the rebels alone.
ACT THREE — The Earth Opens Its Mouth (verses 25–35)
“And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.”
The earth opened her mouth… alive. This is one of the most supernatural, dramatic judgments in all of Scripture. The natural order itself was overturned; the earth literally opened and swallowed the rebels. Immediately afterward, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two hundred and fifty men holding censers as well.
Even those censers were not discarded in vain.
“Let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.”
A sign unto the children of Israel. Even the instruments of tragedy were transformed into a permanent symbol of warning — so that every future generation, seeing the altar, would remember the outcome of rebellion.
ACT FOUR — The People’s Second Complaint, and the Plague (verses 41–50)
Remarkably, the very next day after witnessing this dramatic judgment, the people once again complained against Moses and Aaron.
“But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the LORD.”
A plague broke out among the people, and Aaron, taking his censer, stood between the living and the dead to make atonement, and the plague was stopped — the power of intercession was proven once more, even in the very midst of judgment.
REFLECTION — Reverence for the Order God Has Established
Numbers 16 teaches an uncomfortable truth — even an argument framed in the language of equality or rights, when it amounted to rebellion against the order God Himself had established, was never a trivial matter. Yet at the same time, this chapter shows that the place of the intercessor remained valid even in the very midst of judgment.
