PROLOGUE — Holiness Reaching the Most Private Realm
Leviticus 15 addresses purity regulations concerning discharges from the bodies of men and women — whether caused by illness or normal bodily function. This chapter reveals that God’s order extends even into humanity’s most private, intimate realm.
ACT ONE — A Man’s Discharge Due to Illness (verses 1–15)
“When any man hath a running issue out of his flesh, because of his issue he is unclean… And he that hath not rinsed his hands in water, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.”
The concept of impurity transferring through contact is described in remarkable detail — the seat he sat on, the bed he lay on, the vessel he touched, all could carry defilement. This reflects a strikingly practical awareness of how disease spreads.
ACT TWO — Normal Bodily States (verses 16–18)
“And if any man’s seed of copulation go out from him, then he shall wash all his flesh in water, and be unclean until the even… The woman also with whom man shall lie with seed of copulation, they shall both bathe themselves in water, and be unclean until the even.”
Notably, this regulation includes entirely normal bodily functions, not illness. This was never about sin — only a temporary ritual state, naturally resolved by evening.
ACT THREE — Menstruation and Prolonged Discharge (verses 19–30)
“And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days… And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation… all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be unclean, as in the days of her separation.”
Behind this regulation stands the woman with the twelve-year issue of blood in Mark 5. She lived under this very law as ritually unclean for twelve years. Yet Jesus did not push her away — He commended her faith and made her whole, extending grace beyond the boundary of the Levitical law.
REFLECTION — A Calling to Holiness Woven Into Daily Life
Leviticus 15 shows that even the most natural functions of the human body rest within God’s holy order. This is not a call to shame the body, but a declaration that every area of life — even its most private moments — holds meaning before God.
