Exodus Series — Episode 37
🔥 Prologue — The Words of Chapter 25 Now Take Shape in the Hand In chapter 25, God had revealed to Moses the intricate design of the Ark of the Covenant, the mercy seat, the table, the lampstand, and the altar of incense.
Until then, this had existed only as words, only as a blueprint. But in Exodus 37, those words are finally born as actual objects at Bezalel’s fingertips. This chapter captures the process by which the holiest furnishings within the Tabernacle were completed, one by one.
As we read through this chapter, we witness once again the precise correspondence between plan and execution. What God had revealed was realized exactly as shown, without the slightest distortion.
📦 Act One — The Ark of the Covenant (Verses 1–9) “And Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood; two and a half cubits was its length, a cubit and a half its width, and a cubit and a half its height.”
And Bezalel made. What in chapter 25 had been given as a command—”you shall make”—is now described in the completed tense—”Bezalel made.” This grammatical shift itself symbolically shows that the plan had been carried into execution.
“He overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside, and made a molding of gold all around it.”
The exact dimensions and materials instructed in chapter 25 were realized precisely, without the slightest deviation.
The mercy seat and the cherubim are made as well.
“He also made the mercy seat of pure gold; two and a half cubits was its length and a cubit and a half its width. He made two cherubim of gold; he made them of hammered work, at the two ends of the mercy seat.”
“The cherubim spread out their wings above, and covered the mercy seat with their wings. They faced one another; the faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat.”
This intricate form—two cherubim facing one another with wings spread—now actually existed as a crafted piece of metal. The holy scene once imagined in chapter 25 had now become a reality visible to the eye.
🍞 Act Two — The Table and the Lampstand (Verses 10–24) Next, the table for the showbread is made.
“He also made the table of acacia wood; two cubits was its length, a cubit its width, and a cubit and a half its height. And he overlaid it with pure gold, and made a molding of gold all around it.”
The accompanying furnishings for this table are also completed.
“He made of pure gold the utensils which were on the table: its dishes, its cups, its bowls, and its pitchers for pouring.”
And the instructions for the famously intricate lampstand are realized.
“He also made the lampstand of pure gold; of hammered work he made the lampstand. Its shaft, its branches, its bowls, its ornamental knobs, and its flowers were of the same piece.”
Of the same piece. The demanding technical requirement given in chapter 25—not to assemble it from separate parts, but to hammer it out of a single mass of gold—was followed precisely. This must have required extraordinary patience and skill.
“And six branches came out of its sides: three branches of the lampstand out of one side, and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side.”
The seven lamps and their accompanying implements were also completed in pure gold.
“He made it and all its utensils from a talent of pure gold.”
A talent. This mention of weight shows, concretely, just how costly the materials used for this lampstand truly were. Approximately 34 kilograms of pure gold went into this single furnishing.
🕯️ Act Three — The Altar of Incense and the Anointing Oil (Verses 25–29) Finally, the altar of incense is made.
“He made the incense altar of acacia wood. Its length was a cubit and its width a cubit—it was square—and two cubits was its height. Its horns were of the same piece.”
This altar, too, was overlaid with pure gold.
“And he overlaid it with pure gold: its top, its sides all around, and its horns. He also made for it a molding of gold all around.”
And this chapter closes with the instruments made for this altar, and the compounding of the holy anointing oil and incense.
“He also made the holy anointing oil and the pure incense of sweet spices, according to the work of the perfumer.”
According to the work of the perfumer. That special, precisely regulated ratio given in chapter 30 was followed exactly here as well. There was no room, anywhere, for human creative variation.
🕊️ Reflection — Where Plan and Execution Meet The most important truth discovered in Exodus 37 is this: this chapter contains no new content. It repeats, precisely, what had already been revealed in chapter 25. But this repetition is not tedious redundancy—it carries a deeply important theological message: the complete correspondence between what God said and what human beings actually did.
We often experience a large gap between plan and execution. Something begun with good intentions often ends up looking quite different from its original vision by the time it is actually accomplished. But the process of building the Tabernacle shows the opposite. It was accomplished exactly as God commanded, without the slightest distortion.
And the expression describing the lampstand—”of the same piece.” This intricate craftsmanship shows that devotion to God sometimes demands, not a casual effort, but the finest care and skill we can offer. What we give to God should be the very best we are capable of.
Finally, the fact that all these sacred objects were completed at the fingertips of one man, Bezalel. A talent filled with God’s Spirit became the very channel through which something holy took actual, physical form on this earth.
“Is the calling you have received from God also moving beyond mere planning, into actual completion?”
