PROLOGUE — The King of Moab’s Fear
Numbers 22 begins one of the most distinctive and memorable stories in Scripture — the account of the foreign prophet Balaam and his talking donkey. Having witnessed Israel’s consecutive military victories (chapter 21), King Balak of Moab was gripped by intense fear, and sought to bring Israel down not through warfare, but through a curse.
ACT ONE — Balak Summons Balaam (verses 1–14)
“And Balak the son of Zippor… saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many… And he sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor.”
Moab was sore afraid of the people. Balak judged that a direct confrontation offered no chance of victory. Instead, he hired the renowned foreign prophet Balaam, who lived near the Euphrates, hoping to neutralize Israel through supernatural means — a curse.
Interestingly, Balaam did not immediately accept. He first inquired of God.
“And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?… Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.”
ACT TWO — A Second Delegation, and Balaam’s Compromise (verses 15–21)
Balak did not give up, sending messengers of even higher rank with the promise of greater reward.
“And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.”
If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold. Balaam’s words sounded pious on the surface. But his next action revealed his true heart — “Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.” He had already received a clear answer, yet he continued asking God, hoping for the answer he wanted.
ACT THREE — The Talking Donkey, and the Prophet Whose Eyes Were Opened (verses 22–35)
God permitted Balaam to go, but a dramatic reversal followed immediately.
“And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him… And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.”
Balaam could not see, but the donkey could. This irony is at the very heart of this story — a foreign prophet who prided himself on spiritual insight possessed less spiritual discernment than a mute animal.
“And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?… Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.”
Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam. What the donkey had already seen, Balaam could only see after God Himself opened his eyes. This was a powerful lesson in humility — spiritual reputation or ability guarantees nothing about true spiritual discernment.
The angel’s warning was unambiguous.
“Thy way is perverse before me… And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.”
REFLECTION — Right Words and a Right Heart Are Different Things
The most important lesson Numbers 22 teaches us is that speaking pious-sounding words and actually possessing a heart of obedience are completely different things. Balaam repeatedly declared, “I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD,” yet at the same time kept pressuring God for the answer he wanted.
Even when you already know God’s will, are you continuing to ask Him, hoping for a different answer?
