PROLOGUE — Clarity Following Fear
At the close of chapter 17, the people trembled in fear, saying, “whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die.” Chapter 18 is God’s direct answer to that very fear. God specified exact responsibilities and boundaries for priests and Levites, making clear who was to carry what.
ACT ONE — Priests and Levites: Layers of Responsibility (verses 1–7)
“And the LORD said unto Aaron, Thou and thy sons and thy father’s house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary: and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.”
Shall bear the iniquity. An interesting phrase. The priesthood was never only a privilege — it was also a position that carried the weight of responsibility for failure. The Levites assisted the priests in tabernacle service, but could not approach the holy things or the altar itself — crossing that boundary brought death. Both groups were given precise domains and limits.
ACT TWO — The Priest’s Portion: A Share of the Holy Offerings (verses 8–20)
“I have given thee the charge of mine heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto thee have I given them by reason of the anointing, and to thy sons, by an ordinance for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.”
A covenant of salt. In the ancient Near East, salt symbolized permanence and faithfulness because of its resistance to decay. The priest’s portion was never a temporary assignment, but a covenantal provision that would never change.
And the most theologically profound declaration of this chapter follows.
“And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.”
I am thy part and thine inheritance. Every other tribe received specific territory in the land of Canaan as their inheritance. But for the priest, the inheritance was not land — it was God Himself. This was never deprivation, but rather a higher calling — a direct relationship with God, rather than material possession, was the source of their identity.
ACT THREE — The Levite’s Portion: Tithes, and a Tithe of the Tithe (verses 21–32)
“And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.”
The Levites received tithes from the people of Israel. Yet interestingly, the Levites themselves were required to give a tithe out of that very tithe.
“Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.”
A tithe of the tithe. This regulation shows a principle that no one was exempt from the cycle of devotion. If the Levites received from Israel, they too were required to give to God. Receiving and giving always went hand in hand.
REFLECTION — When Relationship, Not Possession, Becomes the Inheritance
The deepest insight Numbers 18 gives us is that the priest’s “having no inheritance” was never a deprivation. Rather, having God Himself as one’s inheritance was something far greater and far more secure than any land the world could offer.
