PROLOGUE — The Hidden Hand Behind the Temptation of Chapter 25
Numbers 31 completes God’s judgment over the incident at Peor, which corrupted Israel in chapter 25. This war was never simple territorial expansion, but the execution of justice against the force that had sought to spiritually destroy Israel.
ACT ONE — The Command of Vengeance Against Midian (verses 1–12)
“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.”
Afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people. This war was the final task Moses had to carry out before his death. A thousand men from each tribe, twelve thousand in total, went out to this war and achieved complete victory.
And within this record of victory, one deeply significant sentence is inserted.
“They slew also… Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.”
Balaam also they slew with the sword. The foreign prophet who had failed three times to curse Israel was ultimately judged alongside the Midianites. Verse 16, later in this same chapter, implies that he had been the hidden advisor behind the incident at Peor — the temptation that morally corrupted Israel. His lips, which had been forced to speak nothing but blessing, ultimately harmed Israel through a covert strategy, and he paid the price for it.
ACT TWO — The Rite of Purification After War (verses 13–24)
Following their victory, the soldiers could not immediately enter the camp.
“And Moses said unto them… Abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.”
On the third day and on the seventh day. The purification rite of the red heifer’s ashes, already established in chapter 19, was actually applied here. Even victory in war did not exempt soldiers from the impurity caused by contact with death. The glory of victory and the necessity of purification were two entirely separate matters.
ACT THREE — The Fair Division of Spoils (verses 25–54)
The remainder of this chapter addresses remarkably detailed regulations for dividing the plunder.
“And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation… And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred… And of the children of Israel’s half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty… and give them unto the Levites.”
Equally, between those who went to war and those who did not. Those who had actually fought in battle and the congregation who had remained in the camp shared the spoils equally — a symbol that victory in battle belonged not only to the credit of the warriors, but to the whole community, and ultimately to God.
Interestingly, the commanders, discovering that not a single soldier had been lost, voluntarily brought a thanksgiving offering to God.
“We have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us. We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.”
REFLECTION — Purity and Humility Continue Even After Victory
What Numbers 31 teaches us is that even in a moment of victory, purity and humility remain necessary. The soldiers had won, yet they still had to undergo purification immediately. The leaders, facing a remarkable victory, did not become proud, but instead voluntarily brought a thanksgiving offering.
