PROLOGUE — From Curse to Victory, From Loss to Healing
Numbers 21 marks a turning point in Israel’s journey. After the loss and failure of chapter 20, this chapter contains both Israel’s first military victories and one of the most symbolically rich healing events in all of Scripture — the bronze serpent.
ACT ONE — The First Battle Against King Arad (verses 1–3)
“And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners. And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”
The LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel… and utterly destroyed their cities. This was Israel’s very first military victory across the entire forty-year wilderness journey. After forty years of failure and wandering, the first signs of advance finally appeared.
ACT TWO — The Fiery Serpents and the Bronze Serpent (verses 4–9)
But yet another complaint immediately broke out.
“And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?… And our soul loatheth this light bread.”
This light bread. This contemptuous phrase toward the manna marked the final breaking point of God’s patience.
“And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.”
The people repented and sought Moses’s intercession, and God’s response was remarkably distinctive.
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.”
When he looketh upon it, shall live. This method of healing was remarkably simple — no ritual, no effort, no payment was required. Simply looking was enough. And the image itself was the very form of the serpent that had bitten them — the symbol of judgment was transformed into an instrument of healing.
In John 3:14–15, Jesus applied this event directly to Himself — “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” The core principle of the gospel — that simply looking upon Christ lifted up on the cross brings salvation — was already foreshadowed in this wilderness event.
ACT THREE — The Conquest of Sihon and Og, Two Kingdoms (verses 10–35)
The remainder of this chapter records Israel’s conquest of two Amorite kingdoms east of the Jordan — Sihon and Og.
“And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land… And they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.”
These victories became the settlement of the tribes east of the Jordan (Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh) and stood as proof that Israel was finally making substantial military progress.
REFLECTION — Grace That Requires Only a Look
The deepest message Numbers 21 gives us lies in the bronze serpent incident. What saves us is never our own effort or ritual, but simple faith — looking upon the One who was lifted up for us.
Right now, rather than trying to resolve your own sin and failure through your own effort, are you simply looking to Christ lifted up on the cross?
