PROLOGUE — Israel Standing Between Two Worlds
Leviticus 18 establishes boundaries for Israel, positioned between the Egypt they left and the Canaan they are about to enter. This chapter lists highly specific and severe regulations concerning sexual immorality, but behind them lies a far larger theological message — a holy people does not simply absorb the customs of the surrounding culture.
ACT ONE — Do Not Follow the Practices of Egypt or Canaan (verses 1–5)
“After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances. Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God.”
The doings of Egypt… the doings of Canaan. Israel stood between a double temptation — the pull of inertia from the past, and the pressure of a new culture yet to be faced. God commanded them to reject both, and to follow only the ordinances He Himself had given.
ACT TWO — Relations With Close Kin (verses 6–18)
The core of this chapter lists in detail various forbidden sexual relationships, including incest.
“None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.”
The verses that follow specifically prohibit relations with a father’s wife, a sister, a granddaughter, an aunt, a daughter-in-law, and others. This detailed listing was never arbitrary taboo — it was a fundamental order designed to protect the boundaries of trust within family structure. For a home to be a place of safety, clear boundaries had to exist within it.
ACT THREE — Molech Worship and Other Abominations (verses 19–23)
In this section, the scope of the regulation expands beyond sexual immorality.
“And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.”
Pass through the fire to Molech. An explicit prohibition of the horrific Ammonite practice of burning children as offerings to the god Molech. This stands against the backdrop of the widespread horror of child sacrifice throughout Canaanite culture.
ACT FOUR — The Land Itself Vomits Out Its People (verses 24–30)
The chapter closes with an extraordinarily forceful warning.
“Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.”
The land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. A vivid, visceral image — as though the land itself, like a body rejecting indigestible poison, could not bear the immorality of those living within it and expelled them. And God warns immediately: Israel, too, will meet the same fate if they commit the same sins.
“For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled; That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you.”
REFLECTION — A Calling to Live Differently
The heart of Leviticus 18 is not fear of punishment, but a question of identity. Israel came out of Egypt, but was not called to live as Egypt did. Israel was entering Canaan, but was not called to live as Canaan did. They were a different people — a holy people belonging to God.
This applies equally to us today. We are not called to live by the patterns of the old life we left behind, nor by the patterns of the culture surrounding us. In Christ, we are called into a new identity — a people set apart, holy.
