Joshua Chapter 15: Give Me Also Springs of Water — Judah’s Vast Territory, and Achsah’s Wise Request

PROLOGUE — The Most Extensive Tribal Territory

Joshua 15 contains the most detailed and extensive territorial record of any of the twelve tribes — the portion of Judah. This chapter also holds, within its vast geographical list, a moving continuation of Caleb’s story.

ACT ONE — Judah’s Vast Boundaries (verses 1–12)

“This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the uttermost part of the south coast.”

The text lists, in remarkable detail, the southern, eastern, northern, and western boundaries of Judah’s territory — detail befitting the largest and most significant of the twelve tribes. Judah’s territory included the region that would later become the foundation of David’s dynasty and Jerusalem.

Caleb Driving Out the Sons of Anak

ACT TWO — Caleb Conquers Hebron and Debir (verses 13–19)

In the midst of this vast list, the story of Caleb, already introduced in chapter 14, continues.

“And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron. And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.”

Drove out the three sons of Anak. Eighty-five-year-old Caleb, true to his own words, actually defeated the very enemy he had requested — the giant race of Anak. His bold confession of faith (chapter 14) was proven true in actual deed.

A beautiful episode follows.

“And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.”

After marrying, Achsah came to her father with a request.

“And she said, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.”

He gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs. This brief episode is both remarkably practical and moving — Achsah, having received dry southern land, was not simply content, but boldly asked for water resources as well. Caleb granted her request immediately. It was a moment where a father’s boldness passed directly on to his daughter.

ACT THREE — Judah’s City List, and the Jebusites Who Remained (verses 20–63)

This chapter closes by listing the numerous cities belonging to the tribe of Judah, region by region. But its final verse recalls once again the incomplete reality already foreshadowed in chapter 13.

“As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.”

The Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah unto this day. Even the tribe of Judah, despite Caleb’s bold victory, could not achieve complete conquest. Jerusalem would only be fully conquered later, in the days of David (2 Samuel 5) — showing that God’s promise was never an immediate completion, but a process gradually fulfilled across generations.

REFLECTION — Boldness Passed Down, Incompleteness Passed On to the Next Generation

What Joshua 15 shows us is that boldness of faith can be passed down through generations — and, at the same time, the reality that not every inheritance is fully accomplished within a single generation. Caleb and Achsah asked boldly and received, but the complete conquest of Jerusalem still remained the task of the next generation.

Even if there is something left unfinished in your own generation, can you receive it as a faithful relay handed on to the next generation?
