Joshua Chapter 3: The Ark Goes Before and Stops the River — The Miracle of Crossing the Jordan

PROLOGUE — A Second Water Miracle Since the Red Sea

Joshua 3 records another water miracle, one strongly recalling the parting of the Red Sea in Exodus. But this time, it is Joshua rather than Moses, and the ark of the covenant rather than a staff, that stands at the center.

The River Stopping, a Dry Path Opening

ACT ONE — Follow the Ark of the Covenant (verses 1–6)

“And Joshua… came to Jordan… And he commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it. Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it.”

Come not near unto it. The principle already established in Numbers 4 — reverent distance from holy things — is emphasized once again. The people had to follow the ark, but they could never approach it carelessly.

Joshua clearly explained the meaning of this moment.

“This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.”

ACT TWO — The River Cut Off, Dry Ground Revealed (verses 7–17)

The moment the priests, bearing the ark, set their feet into the waters of the Jordan, a dramatic miracle occurred.

“And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water… that the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.”

Stood and rose up… failed, and were cut off. This description carries far more specific geographic detail than the parting of the Red Sea — the water piled up at a specific point upstream, and the flow downstream was completely cut off.

And at the climax of this miracle, a remarkable image appears.

“And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.”

The priests stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan. The priests stood firmly in the middle of the river until the entire people had crossed — a detail not present in the Red Sea event, showing that God’s presence (the ark) not only led the people, but remained steady and unmoved throughout their entire safe crossing.

REFLECTION — Faith That Follows a Presence Going Ahead

What Joshua 3 teaches us is that genuine guidance always begins with God’s presence going ahead first. The people did not part the water themselves — they simply followed the ark that went before them.

Rather than struggling to make your own way, do you trust and follow God’s presence going ahead of you?
