PROLOGUE — The Story of Chapter 27 Reaches Its Conclusion
Numbers 36 is the final chapter of this great book. And this closing chapter returns once more to the story of the daughters of Zelophehad, begun in chapter 27, addressing the practical follow-up regulations for how that just ruling was to actually be carried out.
ACT ONE — The Concern of the Leaders of Manasseh (verses 1–4)
“And the chief fathers of the families of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel… And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.”
Shall be taken from the inheritance. These leaders pointed out a genuine practical problem embedded in chapter 27’s ruling — if Zelophehad’s daughters married men from another tribe, the land they had inherited would pass over to their husbands’ tribe, permanently diminishing the territory of Manasseh.
ACT TWO — A Wise Solution (verses 5–9)
“And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well. This is the thing which the LORD doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry. So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.”
Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their father. This solution beautifully harmonized two principles — the women’s inheritance rights (established in chapter 27) remained fully intact, while a practical limitation was set in place to prevent confusion of tribal territory. The daughters’ freedom lay in choosing whom to marry, not in losing their inheritance rights themselves.
ACT THREE — Obedience, and the Final Words of Numbers (verses 10–13)
“Even as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad… So their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.”
Even as the LORD commanded, so did they. The five sisters, having boldly requested justice in chapter 27, now willingly accepted a limitation set for the good of the whole community. It was a beautiful conclusion where individual rights and communal wisdom coexisted in harmony.
And the entire book of Numbers closes with this understated yet deeply significant sentence.
“These are the commandments and the judgments, which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.”
REFLECTION — A Book That Ends Gazing Across the River
Numbers ends on the plains of Moab, just before crossing the Jordan. Israel had not yet entered the promised land — yet they were more prepared than ever before. The unbelief of the first generation had perished in the wilderness; the new generation had completed its census; the boundaries of the land had been set; and a just system of inheritance had been established.
Numbers does not end in a dazzling victory. Instead, it ends in hope, preparation, and faithfully sustained obedience. The river had not yet been crossed, but the promise on the other side had never felt closer.
